I would say my gender still impacts my identity, even though I'm afab and still female, as my dragon self is also a female. The way gender is perceived by my kind is the exact same as for humans, so I never questioned it.

In the beginning when I found this community, there was a huge disregard of fictionkin as a whole. Don't get me wrong, I don't consider myself to be fictionkin at all, but some may see me as a knockoff of a fictional character due to how I look. There would have definitely been otherkin who would say I'm fake due to my appearance, or what I tell about my adventures in the astral. I therefore had to hide my true identity within the very same community that promised me to be myself. I had to spend a few years being a dragon I never was, a dragon I myself have created out of fear for being not accepted by my kin. But things changed, otherkin as a whole became calmer and less strict about who is or isn't "valid", and I could show my true scales. But now I wonder: Did I really have to hide? Or could I just have shown who I am, and live with the few haters? I probably could have
