Prompt: Canon Reboot
Trying out one of these prompts myself:
If your source material continued, changed significantly, or was rebooted — has that happened? And if so, what did it mean for your identity?
It has happened, a few times actually. I have memories of being Envy from Fullmetal Alchemist. That was originally a manga, then in 2003 it was adapted into an anime. In 2005 there was a movie, Conqueror of Shamballa, released. Then in 2009 there was a reboot of the anime with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Then in 2011 there was a second movie, The Sacred Star of Milos, set in the continuity of the second anime. Finally, in 2017 and 2022, there was a series of three live-action movies released.
My own memories are closest to the depiction in the 2003 anime and the Conqueror of Shamballa movie. They're certainly not exact 1:1, but the broad strokes are there. I feel much less of a connection to the original manga, the Brotherhood anime, or the Sacred Star of Milos movie. And the live action movies are so bad that it's difficult to get past that and really evaluate how closely they match what I remember, though I know at some point that I should.
As for what it's meant for my identity? Mostly that I need to be more specific in my phrasing when telling others about my identity. It hasn't changed what I remember, or how I interpret any of the things that I remember. I suppose you could say that my relationship is to the memories themselves, not to the "canon" that matches those memories. I remember being a homunculus, a creature somewhere in between life and death, between synthetic being and revenant. I remember having a very complicated relationship with my younger half-siblings, envying them for having the life that I had been denied. An even more complicated relationship with the man who was at once my father and my "creator". None of that is dependent on any continuity with the works of fiction that bear a resemblance to the life that I remember.
