Writing prompt II

If your character did things in canon that you find ethically difficult, how do you hold that — as part of what you are, as something separate, or in some other way?

I went through some prompts and landed on this one. I was going to skip it at first because the words/terms used are ones I certainly do not associate with my own identity. I am not a "character" and the term "canon" means nothing to me, it is simply the events that were recreated through media by the creator of said media and don't have to be the absolute truth to the real events. My memories of my past lives are the only things I trust; for as far as anyone can trust their own memories.

I hold the choices I made as a part of myself, even if I regret them or no longer agree with my choices or see them as mistakes. There is no benefit in trying to detach or hold part of myself separate. I personally don't think saying to yourself "I am no longer that person" after you regret something about yourself is helpful or true to yourself. You are your mistakes, just as much as you are the improvements you've made on yourself. Picking and choosing what you want as part of yourself will make things harder in the future, and you might not be able to recognize yourself any longer. It is better to own your mistakes. I really like a quote from the game Skyrim that goes "What is better: to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?" which I think applies here.
I would rather recognize my mistakes and improve myself onward than rid myself of any guilt or responsibility to my own (past) shortcomings.

There are things I have done in my past lives that I regret, decisions and choices I made that seemed right at the time but now I would've done differently with the knowledge I have gained. I also do realize that it is not unimportant to realize that no one has their mistakes, choices and decisions put under a loop as much as someone with a past life that was recreated in media. Your life, and often parts of it which are impactful, traumatic or crucial are being written, voiced, animated and alike just for the amusement of others. There will be lots and lots of people who will see it and form their opinion and it will feel easier to escape from the feeling of responsibility. However the best you can do is to remind yourself that you are the only keeper of your memories and emotions, no one can look inside your head and the only one who will truly benefit from owning up to your mistakes and improving yourself, is you.
