What are Otherkin?

Otherkin (aka Fairth, Metahuman, and sometimes overlapping with Vampires and Furries) are those people who believe themselves to be spiritually and/or physically other than human. While mythological species (elves, satyrs, fairies, dragons, and so on) are widely accepted as being included under the term "Otherkin", many people in the community prefer to include aliens, vampires, therianthropes, furries, extraterrestrial humans, and other nonhuman races. A mythological or literary equivalent is not necessary to be included under the "Otherkin" umbrella-term; there are types of otherkin that have not shown up in known legends or fiction (star-dragons, Elenari, etc.).

It's like this: I'm not an Otherkin. You're not an Otherkin. Collectively, however, you and I and a lot of our mutual friends are otherkin. It's an adjective, not a proper noun. (Thanks to Tiernan for that succinct summary of what had been bothering me about many people's usage of the word)

::I agree and disagree. Yes, Otherkin is not someting that one is, it's a group of people who are not human. However, I am Otherkin -- there are 20+ people in my head, and not all of them are human, or from this world, thus most properly put with all plurals in their correct places "The Crisses are Otherkin". Star of Crisses is an elf, not an Otherkin. Collectively I/we are Otherkin. Similarly, I can see use of the term as an individual label to claim belonging to the community, or to indicate that one does not know what one is yet, but one is certainly not human. An Otherkin as in "one of the group of beings called 'Otherkin' regardless of the specific species(es) in question"--HomePage The Crisses?
