April 17 2011
We're doing a user database cleanup. Any account without a valid email or that hasn't been used in more than a year will be deleted by the end of April
March 5 2011
Given the very long lag times on any maintainence, and that almost no work has been done on the development site in over a year there are a few things we can do:
- Go completely into maintainence only mode, and try to fix things as they break. (This is where the site has been for several years).
- Very slowly develop the current development site.
- Find some volunteers who know perl, catalyst and html to help maintain and improve the site
- Find some trusted volunteers and give them shell access on the server so they can update the content more often
- Add to or replace the site with either a CMS or similar software so that people can add their own content.
Given the above, the development site is still online, and there's an experimental "social networking" type site I threw together in a couple of hours using other people's software (elgg in this case) that's here and allows for most of what the main site does (but is currently much uglier as I didn't spend much time on the appearence).
As always feedback is welcome.
March 4 2011
- Appologies for how long it took, but I think everything is fixed now. If you see any further problems, let us know.
January 24 2011
- Server ugprade broke a few things. I got all the test site ones, but there might be the odd thing on the main site that's not working (other than comments, I know about that one). If you find anything, drop us a line at: oknadmin-upgrade-bugs ... otherkin.net and we'll fix things asap. (replace the ... with the appropriate at symbol).
April 26 2009
- Ported a few more articles to the development site
- Fixed a few minor bugs in article displaying
April 12 2009
- The development site now supports articles and article comments, including submission of new articles. If you are having difficulty commenting on the main site, please try out the new one. We're still in the process of porting all the articles over, so if there's one you want to see let us know.
- If you recieved an unrequested password reminder today, it was due to some sort of bot crawling the website, but identifying itself as a real browser. The reminder code is set up to ignore bots, like google and yahoo's webcrawlers, but that doesn't work if the bot lies. The notifications are sent to the email account you have listed, so there should not be any security issues. Our appologies for the spam.
-
We finally have a few upgrades to the test site. It now supports:
- Editing all user information
- User profile pictures
- Sending email to other users
- Updates via the test site affect the live site, so if you are still having issues logging in, you can use the test site.
- Give it a try and let us know what you think. Hopefully we should have more frequent updates in the near future
- The log-in issue seems to be restricted to Internet Explorer for Windows users, and one report of issues with Safari on the Mac. Switching browsers does seem to help, so if you're having problems, please try either Firefox or Opera. If anyone is having problems with something other than IE, please let me know.
- The test site seems to work for everyone who's had problems, so we'll be working on getting that functional. That will take a while due to the day job. Features will be migrated based on usage, what I feel like working on, and user requests. The new back end is much more flexible, so eventually there should be some improvements as well. As always comments and suggestions are welcome.
- There does not seem to be any pattern to which users can and can't log in, though it does seem to be a more frequent issue for Internet Explorer users. If you're an IE user, can you try Firefox and see if that works?
- If you are one of the people having problems, can you try the test site and let me know if that does or does not work for you. It's hooked into the main database so any changes you make will apply to the main site, but currently it only lets you edit a couple of items.
- Added a new article on the difference between Therians and Weres by Dragonslorefury
- Added an excellent article on evaluating UPG (Unverified Personal Gnosis) ('Believe it or not') to the external articles page. Thanks to Lupa for the link.
- Added a new article Some thoughts on Mediakin by Lupa
- Added a multi-choice option to the directory edit page to make it easier to group folks together on the species page. The list is currently taken from the most common entries (anything over about five people). Let us know what you think.
- Added a new article Beyond Identitykin by Lupa
- Added a new article Otherkin Identity: Is it more than just a label? by Taylor Elwood
- Added another Lupa article ('Otherkin and the Pagan Community') to the external articles page.
- Added a couple of external resources to the recommended reading page.
- Articles in Russian! curtesy of werewolf.org.ua.
- We have a new article I am not a werewolf by Lupa.
- Added 'Elven Moods II' to the Recommended 'Reading' section. Music about elves by an elf - definitely worth a listen.
- Whilst we're at it, if you don't know about Elvendrums you should.
- Reinstated Erelin's List to the humour section, from which it apparently got lost in the site rearranging.
- Added two excerpts from A Field Guide to Otherkin: A Day in the Life of Otherkin and Personal Mythology, Imagination and Metaphor
- Added a sort by species page to the directory.
- Added a couple of articles to the external articles page.
- There was a bug in the directory entry edit code that would prevent some entries showing up. If you intended your user details to be public, please edit your entry and make sure the appropriate checkbox is marked. Our appologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.
- There is apparently a problem with some browsers ability to render standard html pages. We're working on finding a fix to get them to work.
- If you can't see the menu on the right hand side of the screen, we have a site map you can use.
- If you are using something other than Internet Explorer and can't see the menu, please let us know what browser you are using (including version) and what your operating system is. If you are using IE, we strongly recommend up upgrade to a better browser that doesn't have as many security problems. (Mozilla or Opera work on most platforms).
- We had a network and phone outage here for most of the week, so the site's been offline. Appologies for any inconvenience
- We have finally migrated to the new server. This involved rewriting significant parts of the code that generates the website and took longer than anticipated (mostly due to the interference of RealLife™). Most of the improvements are not visible, but make maintaining the site much easier, If you have any problems, please let us know.
- The new look is due to switching the site to xhtml and css. Hopefully it's a little easier to use.
- We aren't quite fully xhtml compliant yet, but we're getting there. So if you get any strange display issues, let us know and we'll fix it. (The site has been tested using konquery, mozilla, firefox and opera. There may be Internet Exporer related issues due to it's non-standards compliance. We'll fix those if we can.)
- The user and directory databases have been merged. This will make editing your directory entry easier.
- The humour section is now under articles.
- We have a new piece Erelin's List.
-
It's been a while since there has been any major additions to the site (mostly due to the admins suddenly having a life). There's a few new entries in the wiki, gathers, but overall things have been quiet.
So we're having a little competition. We have a couple of complete sets (1-6), and several more almost complete sets (1-5) of the original run of Kinships (the Magazine for people who exist anyway). Each month (until we run out), we'll send a set to the person who submits the best article, makes the best contribution to the wiki or adds the most interesting reviews to the Recommended 'Reading' section.
(If you don't want a complete set, or just want to buy your own, you can get copies of the original run from Dandelion Studios" or the new editions from Angelic Press).
-
We have one new article so far this month:
- Shadows: A Guide by Archer
- An introduction to shadows and shadow people
- The Wiki is now available for public use. It's a little rough around the edges, but the whole point of wikis is that people can add to, edit and improve the contents. You do need to be logged in to edit, mostly to keep the spambots out, but there's no restrictions on creating an account. This is an experiment, so we'll see how it goes. As always, feedback is appreciated.
- We now have a Recommended 'Reading' section. It actually includes most forms of media (books, movies, music). As usual, feedback is appreciated.
-
After being quiet for a while, we have several new articles:
- Blurring the Lines by Michelle Belanger
- What Dragons Are. by Rene
- Dragon Definitions by Rene
- by
- For those of you who haven't heard, the Psychic Vampire Codex is available. Whilst it's primarily aimed at vampires, much of the energy work section is applicable to many people, especially otherkin. It's written by Michelle Belanger of House Kheperu, who has written several articles for otherkin.net.
- We now have black t-shirts available for all those people who've been asking for them for the last couple of years. They also come in dark green, red, purple and blue. (The black and green look good, we haven't seen the others yet). See the store page for more details.
- Fixed various forms. (Anything that sent email was broken, including the "contact" link. Oops. Sorry about that).
- After much gnashing of teeth, the links
section is now integrated with the rest of the site. (We were using an
increasingly hacked package from
Gossamer Threads, which meant that any updates to the page format
required changes in four or five different places and half a dozen external
scripts).
As this is a significant rework (it's all new code), there might be the odd bug. If you notice anything, let us know. - To go with the links update, we have an improved review system. So if you find you like, or don't like, a site in the links section, leave a review.
- If you added a site in the last week or so, check to see if it's there. We lost a couple of sites due to problems with the old system.
- The chat page is the latest to be converted over. The usual add, edit and delete functions now work.
- Added a brief introductory piece on terminology. The subject really requires at least an essay (contributions welcome, or leave a comment).
- Our friend's over at the aptly named losers.org have finally dropped off the top of the referers list. Come-on guys (and gals, and small furry creatures from alpha-centurii), you can do better than that. Let's see if you can get over 4% of our page views this month. ;-)
- We have several new articles (and more in the pending queue).
- Tolerance versus Gullibility by Michelle Belanger
- How Much is Too Much? by Michelle Belanger
- Identifying Your Otherkin Species by Sprite Rêvenchate
- I finally tracked down the login problem some people were having. It turns out to be a Microsoft IE 6.0 issue. Instructions for fixing IE are on the login page.
- The site reorganisation is in progress. If you can't find something, check the site map. Nothing has been lost, it might just be inaccessible for a while whilst I sort everything out.
- Some of the moves have affected the timestamps on files. Anything marked "updated" probably hasn't been significantly changed in the last week.
- Phase one of the directory purge is complete. That means anyone who hasn't updated their entry or responded to the email is now no longer visible in the main directory. Currently that's X people. Which leaves Y entries.
- Ongoing db improvements means that the above numbers are 'live' and will change as the database gets updated.
- Added a few sanity checks to new directory entries.
- Fixed the site map so that it generates from the site automatically.
- The list of mailing lists has been redesigned somewhat and list statistics are generated automatically, and correctly, now (only for yahoogroups lists so far, but that's most of them). It also now uses the main database so any additions are instant.
- The directory now has "updates since last visit" in addition to the "updates in the last day/week/month" for those people who are logged in.
- The code for calculating latitude and longitude from US zipcode now actually works. It will insert the correct values on new entries and when editing existing ones.
- A minor bug in the geographical listing has been fixed.
- The credits page has been updated and now also includes a brief description of the servers.
- Several minor behind the scenes improvements as the admins learn more SQL.
- We have a new front page, which you are quite possibly reading this on, as it contains the most recent updates.
- The old front page is here in case you want to look at it. Opinions on the change are welcome.
- Reworked the comment system. It's a slightly different look, but not by much. However, comments can now be nested (replies to replies will be indented) and the code is much simpler (1/6th the size) and easier to maintain
- Replaced the guestbook with the new comment code.
- The new code should allow newer features (such as selecting the order of comments) to be easily implemented. Suggestions welcome as always
- There's been a few teething troubles with the new site code, nothing serious but occasionally people have gotten the "server error" page. Everything I know about has been fixed now, appologies for any inconvenience this has caused.
- At long last, you can now edit your directory entries online. Just go to your entry and click on the "create account" link and it will email you a password to let you edit it. As always, feedback is appreciated.
- There's also a variety of cleanups to the server code been done, so the site should be a little more responsive.
- Enabled the distance code in the directory. This allows you to ask for people within a given distance of you (or actually anyone in the database). However this requires having actual latitude and longitude coordinates for everyone. An automated script has been run over the directory database that used city and state to get approximate coordinates for people in the US. I've also hand added and corrected a number of entries. However this is based on the nearest town. For more accurate distances (I have noticed ones that have been up to 80 miles off) you need to provide either a zipcode (within the US) or actual lat-long coordinates. So far maporama seems to cover the most countries if you want to look your's up and submit them.
- Fixed a lot of the coordinates, mostly adding them for the rest of the world. Unfortunately this means that every entry I touched is listed as updated which is slightly misleading, not to mention making the 'recent changes' page rather verbose. It does mean about two thirds of the database has initial coordinates though. So try it out and let us know what you think.
- We finally have the new code for the directory working. It's now running against a real database as opposed to a flatfile and generated on the fly so it should be more up to date. It also enables a few new features, such as listing recent changes.
- Hopefully you'll be able to edit your own entries soon (the edit code is there, we just don't have a way of proving who you say you are yet to prevent people editing the wrong entries).
- The phoneline that the server's DSL runs over was dead since the 20th. It's fixed now. Nothing was lost except some patience.
- Added an explanation of the lineage of the Japanese royal family with respect to mythology to the What are otherkin? page.
- Cafepress actually send us a check. :-) Which almost covered this years domain registration.
- Updated the cafepress store. Mostly cleaning out things no one has shown any interest in. Cafepress has hadded a few new items in the last few months, so several of those have been added. (The journals look good). If anyone actually buys anything, please let us know what you think of it. I will be adding a few things without the small url on the images shortly, in case anyone is interest in not having "otherkin" anywhere on the items.
- The Otherkin Reiki project now has a wiki. If it works well, wikis will be available for any hosted account.
- Added a new Judge Ri episode from Butterfly.
- The ftp server is back online, for those with websites. That's the last of the rebuild related issues as far as I know
- The "You might be if..." document is back online. Mostly because I get at least one person complaining about it's absence at week.
- Otherkin.net is now three years old.
- Cafepress has recinded some of the worst of the changes in their terms of service. We are still looking into alternatives, but for now the store stays up. (It hasn't even payed for the domain renewal, so it is mostly a way to get people neat stuff).
- The site is now (almost) completely HTML 4.01 Transitional compliant. It would be HTML 4.01 Strict compliant but they depreciated a few things and the replacements involve javascript, which the site designer is avoiding.
- We dropped a few entries in the directory due to a file save bug. It's fixed and we should be able to recover them, but if you submitted an entry in the last week and can't find your entry you may need to resubmit it.
- The server has been overhauled. Mostly this means we have the latest versions of the software we use (fixes for a few bugs and potential security holes) and a lot more disc space. The former means less work for the system admin, the latter means we can do More Stuff(tm).
- Due to a change in the terms of service at Cafepress (basically they'll charge US$25 a quarter for every quarter we don't make at least US$25, and we haven't made that much in the last year) we will be closing the store we have there. So if you want any of the miriad things with the graphic from the front page on it, you have until the last week of June to order it.
- Updated the soulbonds article.
- Fixed a number of entries in the poetry section that weren't getting any newlines. Anything marked [updated] should be readable now.
- Many updates to the gathers page, removing things that happened and adding a collection of new events.
- Minor edits to the directory as people trickle in with update notices, and a couple of dozen new entries in the last month
- A completely rewritten version of What are otherkin?
- Two new pieces - one filk, one poem.
- The usual additions and subtractions from the directory
- A whole pile of new glitches to the bug list. Urk. I'll get to them eventually.
- Most of the admin email aliases have been getting spammed. Appologies if you use one of the discontinued ones and get a bounce. They should all be converted to webforms soon.
- Added a new Judge Ri episode from Butterfly. Be afraid. Or amused. Take your pick
- A whole bunch of directory cleanups as people noticed they'd fallen off the list. (Current list stats are: 812 entries, 348 unresponsive emails, 170 bouncing emails, 294 live folks)
- A few updates to the chat venues list
- A couple of new lists on the mailing lists list.
-
The site is now being generated (mostly) on the fly, so things like the comment counts should
be accurate. You shouldn't notice any difference at this point, but if you find anything not
working, please report it.
This will (hopefully) enable some more improvements, such as editing your own directory entries and other fun things. :) -
The directory purge resulted in:
which means a mere third of the entries are live people. When I get a little further into adapting the site to be more autonomous any still unresponsive addresses will be removed.Totals: 778 entries, 392 unresponsive emails, 129 bouncing addresses, 257 live folks
- Initiated the first coherent validation and purge of the directory. So far there's over a hundred entries with no valid email address, from a total of 723 (erm 724, someone just added themselves...). So if you think you're on the list and haven't gotten an email, go check to see if you're in the "disappeared" section. If you aren't on the list, why not? :)
- Updated the list server software. Lots of minor improvements that no one will notice.
- Many minor bug fixes, several little things were broken. Thanks to those who pointed such out.
- More people in the directory, as usual. This increases at several a week
- Several new entries in the links section
- A couple of new mailing lists
- A new and much improved spamblock for the directory. There is now no way for spammers to extract email addresses, as they aren't available on the site. Instead we have a nice form which will let you email people, but doesn't show their address. Thus no one will see your email unless you reply to email from them.
- The directory is up to over 600 people now!
- Little bits and pieces of behind the scenes work, and generally keeping the site running
- Finally completed the update of the links section. This is a major overall, cleanup and reclassification of things. It includes a new feature that allows links to be in more than one category in a sane way. Hopefully it will be easier to use.
- Added Services page, to remind people about the other things otherkin.net provides, such as the mailing list server.
- Updated Otherkin Behaviour Patterns to include a link to a similar pattern that's actually been studied.

- True World by Meg
- The Coming of an Age by AnaraRaven
- Finally, a submissions form. It's not linked in anywhere but here yet though.
- Enabled the comment system on a whole collection of things that weren't before. Unfortunately this makes many things look "new" that aren't. All the new things are on this page though.
- Cafepress is having a sale, so if you'd like things with the seven pointed star from the splash page on it, they are more reasonably priced. See the gift shop for details.

Which will enable us to have much more frequent updates and to fix all the things that currently don't work. We'll also be upgrading and improving the site, so if you have any ideas, things to contribute, etc, please drop us an email.
- A few thoughts on the new Lord of the Rings movie provided by Syleniel. I'll add other reviews and comments as we get them. I'm sure there'll be a lot of discussion on this one.
- Things are taking longer than expected to fix. Our appologies for the delays and things that still do not work.
- Once we are back to normal, there are likely to be some changes in the approach and content of the site. What those changes will be are still undecided. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please send us email.
- In the mean time, for your entertainment there is the latest rant available in the rants section.
- Many of the services still are not repaired. We're working on it. It will take a while longer, we do have lives after all.
- Managed to update the Directory with a whole bunch of new folks.

- We now have a comment system in place which allows you to comment on articles and other pieces of the site. It is not yet installed on every article (it will take a little longer to go through them all and enable them), but you can see it in place, at least in the What are Otherkin, So... You're Awake? and the Help Wanted pages, and probably more by the time you read this. Comment-enabled pages have a couple of links at the bottom to allow you to add and read comments. It's something of an experiment, so let us know what you think.

- Added a new article, How Do I Know if I am Dragon?.

- Currently we are in the process of moving the website from it's previous location to the new server. We are rebuilding parts of the site to make it more useful as we do so, so it might take a while and there will be lots of small and large changes.
- Most of the Articles section is now moved, and the Webweaving section is moved and now contains the otherkin mailing lists page as well as the directory of where to find otherkin.

Added more pieces from the backlog, some of these are up to six months old (I did say backlog). Yes, there does appear to be something of a theme in the recent article additions. It's not a bias on my part (despite some of the rants), it's just what has been submitted. Feel free to comment on them (that's what the comment system is for) or submit you own.

We are back online. Djinni (the main server) was broken into and compromised. No data appears to have been lost, but the machine had to be rebuilt to ensure the intruder was removed and could not regain access. Some services are still down, but the website (obvious) and mail are back online.

Otherkin.net was featured on a wire article from Flash News. This has generated a lot of interest from the news organisations that subscribe to the Flash News wire.

Otherkin.net is a year old. Happy Birthday.
We've come a long way from half a dozen pages on Tirl's personal webspace, to supporting
not only the ever growing main Harmony&Discord site, but also several other community
projects such as Lostkin,
Otherkin Reiki and the Angelic Project, along
with mailing lists, and personal accounts.
21st June 2001
The survey forms for the Otherkin Encyclopedia project are now active and usable. Once we have a few more submission, initial forms of the data will start going up. As always feedback is appreciated.
19th June 2001
One of our articles has been re-published (with permission of course) at Conscious Creations. The site has several articles which may be of interest to metaphysically minded otherkin.
7th June 2001
A lot of new sites in the links section, almost all due to people adding their own sites,

4th May 2001
Added many new people to the otherkin directory.

We have finally migrated to the new server, which is bigger, faster and has more bandwidth. Everything seems to work fine, and gradual improvements and additional features will gradually be added now we have the capacity to support them. If you notice any problems, please contact us.
