The Wendigo most often viewed as a malevolent creature who will swoop down the sky to attack evil-doers; legend states they will drag them and force them to run until the evil-doer's feet catch fire. After that point, they are either taken up into the sky or they keep running until they are no more; in either case, they are never seen or heard from again. I remember one particular ghost story as a child that said pretty much the same thing; not that one should neccessarily believe those ghost stories, but that it is how the Windigo appears in myth and legend.
The Windigo is either perceived as an amorphous entity or as a giant creature, often ten feet or taller, and is often associated with a madness that drives people to cannibalism. Some legends describe it almost in a similar vein as vampires or werewolves: to be bitten by a Windigo would transform one into a Windigo. Sometimes it is depicted as something that is able to change shape, move at superhuman speed, and frighten a person to death with a single glance.
It can be seen as a symbolic representation of the madness induced by extreme hunger; the Windigo is native to the colder climates of the north american continent, legendary to the Algonkian people (including: the Algonkin, Blackfoot, Cree, Micmac, and Montagnais-Naskapi).
