From what i have read, selkies are water folk who look to be seals but can shed their skin to become a beautiful woman. And as legend has it; if their skin can be collected by a young man (i will add that this is said to be very hard to do) then she will become his wife and bear him beautiful children. But if she can ever find the skin she will return to the sea and leave her husband and children.
